Money saving hint: If you plan to scan mostly or only in color, you will not need as high a true optical resolution as you do with monochrome. 200 dpi, not acceptable for monochrome, has the same resolution as a 3.3 megapixel digital camera printed at 8" x 10" and will do quite well for most color applications. GIS applications do need the high optical resolution.
Most important consideration: Color scanning is more sensitive than black and white. Scanners with glass focus panels require constant cleaning to insure that dust does not cause streaks and flairs. Take this into consideration for purchase as it will add to the total scanning time.
